::History::
    Born on October 14, 1166 as the son of Malcolm, Lord of Locksley and Earl of Huntingdon, it was impressed upon Robin from the time he was small that despite his life of privilege, he had to take seriously his responsibilities toward king, country, and the people of Locksley, who relied on him. Still, a love of adventure and mischief ran in the family, and he inherited plenty of that, too. When he lost his mother at the age of five, that puckishness became a convenient facade for him to adopt in order to hide his pain from his friends, a habit which has stuck with him throughout his life.

Robin began demonstrating talent with a bow at a young age; whilst the other boys were barely aware that they should be aiming, he was hitting nearly everything for which he aimed. Malcolm trained him for a few years; after his death when Robin was ten, Robin would spend hours-- sometimes, whole days-- working on improving his shots, pouring his frustration at losing his only remaining family into his technique. When he got older, he hired an instructor to train both him and his manservant-cum-best-friend, Much, at swordplay; it was just supposed to be for fun, but the lessons were put to good use later on. He did well at his other lessons, too, enjoying reading and philosophy, and doing decently at figures. While he did not particularly care for being schooled in manners and social niceties, he nonetheless grasped them.

Another key player in his life was Marian of Knighton, daughter of Sir Edward, the Sheriff of Nottingham. Even though he was four years older, he often played with her when the families got together, not minding the age or gender differences. As they grew, their friendship grew, as well; and eventually, that friendship deepened to something more. He never let her know exactly how much she meant to him, partially because of his inability to discuss real emotion, and partially because his flirtatious nature made him rebel against falling so thoroughly for one woman that soon in his life. But, even if he could not express his love, he likewise could not deny it. When he was nineteen, proposed to her after obtaining permission from her father; and, she accepted. Shortly thereafter, however, the king called a debt which Malcolm had owed the crown, summoning assistance from Locksley to the Holy Land. With Robin the only one left from the Locksley nobility, the debt fell to him. When he shared the news with Marian, she ended their betrothal in the culmination of a massive argument. He accepted her decision with little grace; although, privately, he could see the unfair side of expecting her to wait for him, when he had no idea if or even when he would return.

The Crusades were not at all what he expected. Despite his heartache at losing Marian, he rather anticipated the war, thinking it would be exciting and glorious; instead it was hot, dirty and bloody, a living nightmare. And yet... he grew accustomed to it, at least usually. His tendency to bury difficult memories worked well for his life as a soldier, but his compassion hindered his ability to keep himself distanced from the death and suffering he was dealing out. The experience haunts him still, although usually through nightmares; it only gets through to his conscious thoughts when his guard is down. To keep himself sane, he set out to learn what he could of the lands and people he encountered, giving him a wider perspective on the whole situation than many of his fellow Crusaders possessed.

He was so skilled a fighter and strategist, as well as being unwaveringly loyal to the crown, that he rose to the position of Captain in His Majesty, King Richard's Royal Guards. About four years after Robin's arrival in the Holy Land, he was sliced up the left side during an attempt on the king's life, which he managed to thwart (and which he recently learned was not carried out by Saracens, as they were led to believe, but was instead initiated by Vaizey, the current Sheriff of Nottingham and underling of Prince John, and his lieutenant, Sir Guy of Gisborne-- who inflicted the injury on Robin). The wound became infected, leaving Robin under the grip of a fever for some time, Much doing what he could to nurse his master back to health. The army moved on, and King Richard instructed Robin to go home to recuperate, intending for him to return when he was fully healed.

Only two days after he and Much got back to Nottinghamshire, they found themselves outlaws in Sherwood Forest. Robin had been unable to take Edward and Marians' advice about playing "the long game" with the new, cruel sheriff; rather than allow four of his villagers to hang for stealing grain to feed the hungry, he set them free and called the people of Nottingham to arms against the tyranny of the sheriff and Prince John. He has spent the last year living in temporary camps, gathering a small but loyal gang of men-- and one woman. Through ambushes, heists, and other clever plans (or sometimes, only half-plans), they've been gathering wealth intended for the sheriff or Prince John, and distributing it to the suffering people of Nottingham. Meanwhile, he's been trying to win back Marian's affection, since he never stopped loving her, but is meeting with limited success. And in fact, he may be losing her altogether, as she's about to marry Gisborne, the culmination of a betrothal into which she was coerced, but which she does not see herself as able to find a way out of.

::Personality::
    To most people, Robin comes off as devil-may-care, flirtatious, cheeky, puckish, or downright cocky and arrogant. While all of these are true aspects of his nature, they're only the surface layer, an armor against opening himself to others. His friends get a better sense of his cleverness and loyalty, of his very real concern for those dependent on him-- as well as his tendency to take those closest to him for granted. This is related to his focus, which tends to be on the broad scheme of things; while important, that means he can miss issues right in front of him.

He is intelligent, educated, a born strategist, unusually open-minded for his time, and more often than not, rational unless he has lost control of a situation. Despite his intelligence and rationality, however, his impish side often takes hold, and has gotten himself and those around him into trouble on more than one occasion. Fortunately, he thinks well on his feet (although it is not his strongest suit), and can usually get out of a troubling situation. At his core, he cares greatly for his fellow man, and is glad that he is able to do so much to help those in need. That's not to say that the danger and excitement that come with being Robin Hood do not appeal to the thrillseeking side of his nature; but, he could have returned to his position in the Royal Guard, or found some other way to fill that need. Instead, he has sacrificed everything he ever knew for the people of Nottinghamshire and the king of England. Still, deep down, part of him longs for the life he may never have, settled at Locksley with Marian at his side, letting someone else save the world.

He can be quick to anger, and is adept at provoking others to it, as well. He has an innate blindness to his less pleasant qualities, and an intentional blindness to painful memories. The latter has a lot to do with his view on life: that it's always moving forward. To dwell on things which cannot be changed, no matter how much he may wish it, only inhibits his ability to focus on the issues in front of him. It's also related to his reluctance to share his more vulnerable emotions with anyone, as he has been a leader from a young age and needs to be seen as strong and in control. However, he's been doing that for so long that he doesn't always know when to stop, maintaining his lighthearted facade with his friends and even the woman he loves, sometimes when they need him to open up with them.

Despite his skill at warfare, the Crusades showed Robin more death than he could handle. He's not the pacifist that Gisborne and Vaizey accused him of being, but he and his gang have a policy of not killing unless they must, sticking to nonlethal actions whenever possible. The morning before he's being brought to the island, however, the gang was surrounded by castle guards and hired mercenaries, whilst Marian lay dead (or so they thought) in a cave with the outlaws. Driven past reason by his grief, Robin led a charge in which all but a couple of sheriff's men were wiped out. As it turned out, Marian survived, but that damage was done. Robin has had little time to reflect on his actions of that morning, but it will haunt him when he does, even though he will not let on or dwell on it.

As he comes into the game, he is very frustrated with Marian's refusal to stop her wedding to Gisborne. He expects that his outlawry will end when the king learns of the situation, and has hoped that he can still wind up in the life he should have had five years ago. Therefore, Marian's plans to go along with marriage to Gisborne are not only hurting Robin now, but are also destroying his hopes for the future-- what was getting him through his troubles. He's hurting and angry, and is considering leaving Nottinghamshire, and the work of Robin Hood, behind him.
